The Ginsan pattern from the Burgin sisters (Kiyomi and Sachiko) is a top down, raglan style, oversized cardigan. The unisex design is knit in stockinette stitch, but has some interesting details: A double knit neckband, sleeve cuffs, and roomy pockets with a clever construction. Stripe detail on neckband and cuffs and working buttonholes are also an option. Let's cast on now to complete a cozy cardigan that's ready to wear when the weather shifts!

Class Schedule:

• 9/16: Measure gauge swatch, calculate size and cast on. Start working the neck, shape shoulders and begin raglan increases for the yoke.
• 10/7: Divide stitches for body, sleeves, and pockets.
• 10/21: Begin pocket flaps. Discuss joining the right pocket, center panel, and left pocket to continue knitting the body.
• 11/4: Begin knitting the sleeves. Discuss the double knit cuffs and graft edge.
• 11/18: Pick up stitches around the upper body/neck and begin to work a double knit band. Learn how to graft the neck edge.
• 12/2: Pick up stitches along the lower front bands and begin to work in rib pattern with or without buttonholes. Graft neck edge refresher.
• 12/9: Begin knitting pockets in the round. Learn the three-needle bind off. Discuss weaving in ends and blocking.

Note: The amount of time to complete the sweater will be dependent on the size knitted and time you devote to knitting each day/week.

• Yarn Options:
  • Yarn A (main color) - 950 (1090, 1230, 1315, 1520, 1640, 1785, 1900, 2090) yds of aran weight yarn, depending on size knitted. For longer sleeves, an additional 99 (110, 126, 126, 137, 142, 159, 159, 175) yds will be needed.
  • Yarn B (optional for stripes) - 35 (35, 40, 40. 45. 45, 50. 50. 50) yds of aran weight yarn.
  • Yarn C (optional for stripes) - 35 (35, 40, 40, 45, 45, 50, 50, 50) yds of aran weight yarn.
  • Yarns to consider at Looped include Rosa Pomar Matiz, Baa Ram Ewe Woodnote Aran, Isager Aran Tweed, Big Little Yarn Co. Aran, and Cascade Eco Wool.
• Size 8 US 40" circular needles for the body. Size 8 US needles for working small circumferences in the round (sleeves). Size 6 US 40" circular needles for the body hem. Size 6 US needles for working small circumferences in the round (sleeve cuffs). Size 5 US 40" circular needles for the neckband.
  • These needle sizes are suggested by the pattern. Please note that these sizes can change for you based on your gauge. If you are unsure about your gauge, come to class with your gauge swatch to discuss before purchasing all needles (see swatch homework below).
• Waste yarn or Barber cords
• Stitch markers
• Tapestry needle
• 5 20-25 mm/ 3/4"-1" buttons (optional)

***Homework*** Please come to class having knit and blocked a stockinette swatch. Cast on 22 stitches using size 8 US needles. Knit 30 rows in stockinette stitch and bind off. Soak the swatch for 20 minutes in a bowl of cool water. Remove the swatch and gently squeeze excess water. Lay flat to dry.
