Sabai Top
If you can cast on, knit and purl confidently, and bind off, you can knit a sleeveless top for spring! In this 3-part series, we will knit the Sabai Top pattern by Susanne Muller. You'll be able to choose between the ribbed border version or one completely in stockinette stitch. The simple construction and stitch increases learned are transferable skills for other future garments you might want to knit--like a sweater!
Class Schedule:
- 4/6: Measure gauge swatch, calculate size, and cast on. Learn left and right leaning knitted and purled increases for shoulder shaping.
- 4/13: Separate the work into front and back pieces. Begin increases for armhole shaping.
- 4/27: Rejoin front and back pieces to begin working the body in the round. Discuss desired length and bottom border.
- Note: After the final class, you will continue knitting the body of your Sabai Top to your desired length and bind off on your own. No additional techniques are needed to finish the top. The amount of time to complete the top will be dependent on the size knitted and time you devote to knitting each day/week.

- This pattern uses a DK weight yarn. The yarn estimates are listed in grams on the pattern, but the yardage conversion estimates are as follows:
- XS: 480yds (S: 600yds) M: 600yds (L: 700yds) XL: 840yds (XXL: 960yds). See pattern for size measurements.
- Size 6US 24" circular needles. The pattern also recommends a 6US 32"-40" circular needle, but may be not necessary.
- You will need to complete a gauge swatch on 6US needles prior to the first class. Please see homework note below.
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
Please come to class having knit and blocked a stockinette gauge swatch. Cast on 26 stitches using size 6US needles. Knit 32 rows in stockinette stitch (knit the right side rows, purl the wrong side rows) and bind off. Soak the swatch for 20 minutes in a bowl of cool water, remove the swatch and gently squeeze it to remove excess water. Lay flat to dry. If you do not obtain the necessary stitch gauge, don't worry. We will discuss options such as selecting a different size to knit or finding another needle size to obtain the recommended gauge in the first session.
