Choose Your Own Colorwork Adventure

Join Stephanie for an advanced sweater knitting adventure! This class is for you if there's a particularly challenging colorwork pattern you've been meaning to knit, you're eyeing a pattern but want to make some serious modifications, or you've been frustrated with the way your colorwork has turned out. We'll cover advanced topics like: corrugated ribbing, tubular cast ons, where to add in short rows to patterns that lack them, ladderback jacquard, modifying yoke size at the division of arms and body, how to add or modify charts, modifying a bottom-up yoke pattern to be top-down, or whatever other obstacles you encounter! Plus, we'll talk about the eternal bugbears of color theory, color dominance, getting a great fit, and experimenting with different ways of holding multiple strands of yarn.

Materials for the first class:

  • Pattern of your choice. It is recommended to select a DK to worsted weight pattern so we can accomplish all that we want, but if you're ready to knit fast, you may go for a fingering or sport weight pattern. Know thyself! Preferably select a top-down pattern, but if what you're itching for is a bottom-up pattern, we can go over how to flip it in class.
  • Yarn & needles to be determined by pattern. Note: Consider bringing a set of 32” circs one size up from your main (stockinette) gauge to work the colorwork sections (in case you tend to knit colorwork tighter). If you choose to use small (12” or less) circumference needles for the sleeves, consider one size up (in case you tend to knit tighter on smaller circs).
  • Stitch markers, darning needle, and barber cords
Provisional Schedule:
Since we're all working on different sweater patterns, this is just a guideline for how we'll proceed in class! We might all go at a different pace but that's ok:
  • 2/18: Color theory / yarns / swatches / casting on
    • Come to class with your gauge swatch finished and all your yarns, including color options if you're stuck
  • 2/25: Inserting short rows, yoke modifications
    • Come to class with the ribbing finished—bring your larger 16” circs
  • 3/4: Colorwork - catching floats / increases, ladderback jacquard
    • Come to class having worked some amount of the yoke chart
  • 3/18: Modifying yoke size at the division of sleeves and body
    • Come to class having knit to the point at which you'll divide the body and sleeves
  • 3/25: Trying on, further mods, a fancy bind-off?
    • Come to class having knit the sleeves to desired length, and about 6” of the body—leave sleeves still on needles if you'd like to try a fancy bind-off
  • 4/8: Finishing touches and weaving in ends
    • Come to class with everything bound off but your ends loose so we can weave them in!

***Homework for the first class on 2/18:***
Please come to class having knit and blocked a stockinette gauge swatch in the round. If you don't block it, it won't be accurate! Part of leveling up is knitting a swatch in the round if we’re knitting the garment in the round. Add 8 rows and 8 stitches to the target gauge of the pattern, then knit your swatch in stockinette in the round using Ysolda’s method (Option 3) before binding off. Block your swatch as you’re going to wash it (likely handwashing with a few drops of Soak)—here’s a tutorial on the quick-dry burrito method. Have a go at measuring your swatch (photo guide here). You could also do a practice colorwork swatch to try out your color combinations using the same method—I find that I need to go up one needle size from the plain stockinette sections when knitting stranded.
