Intarsia 103: Summer Top
Summer in style with Anna Husemann's Intarsia Top, a gateway into the magical world of this retro knitting method. Though it looks intimidating, intarsia is a fabulously easy technique that allows for the creation of spectacular motifs—though it can get messy. We'll learn reading intarsia charts, knitting intarsia flat, introducing a second color, introducing even more colors, and how to handle curves in the chart. Plus, if you don't know them: mattress stitch, i-cord straps, and grafting. Note that you can modify the straps to make them wider for a shell instead of a tank!
Attendance/Summer travel: Extra sessions are built in to accommodate if you need to miss a session for summer vacation, so don't worry if one or two of the dates conflicts for you as long as you can make most of them!
Materials:
- Purchase the Intarsia Top pattern by Anna Husemann here
- Yarn: You can either use two strands of fingering weight yarn held together or one strand of DK yarn. Great summery options from the shop would be Knitting for Olive Pure silk or Cotton Merino, Illimani Sabri, Sandnes Garn Mandarin Petit (fingering) / Malabrigo Veranita, Sandnes Garn Line (DK)—my top pick is Cotton Merino or Sabri. The small shapes are perfect for using up leftover scraps from stash. Note that the yarn requirements listed in the pattern are for DK; if you are using fingering held double you'll need to double the following amounts:
- Colour A (main color): 430 (434) 489 (547) 619 (711) 791 (885) 967 yds
- Colour B: 77 (85) 90 (95) 108 (119) 136 (145) 165 yds
- Colour C: 35 (35) 35 (39) 42 (47) 52 (56) 66 yds
- Colour D: 24 (25) 26 (27) 28 (32) 37 (39) 43 yds
- Colour E: 8 (8) 8 (10) 10 (12) 13 (13) 13 yds
- Colour F: 51 (58) 64 (70) 83 (89) 94 (109) 114 yds
- Needles: Size 3.25 mm/US 3 circular needles in 24" or 32" depending on top size AND 2.50 mm/US 1.5 circular needles in 24" or 32" depending on top size and double pointed needles (or whatever size you need to make gauge)
- Tapestry needle, bobbins (optional, wait to buy until the first class)
Homework: Knit and block your gauge swatch so you know what size to make. In main color, cast on for the front body and knit the ribbing and three rows in garter (i.e. the first three rows of the chart). Stop before Row 4 (all sizes)
Skill Level: | Advanced |
Skill Details: | Learn intarsia charts with non-straight angles and curves, mattress stitch, i-cord, grafting. |
Requirements: | You should have at least one garment under your belt, know how to cast on/off, knit/purl, and increase/decrease with confidence. No experience required with colorwork or intarsia. If you've taken Intarsia 101 or 102 with Stephanie you'll have a leg up—though you'll still learn something, since we never did angles and curves in those classes! |
