If you’ve made a sweater or two and you’re ready to level up your garment game, join Stephanie for an eight-part class to knit Tin Can Knits’s Love Note. In addition to covering standard garment construction like raglan shaping and picking up for sleeves, this class will teach you how to do a provisional cast on, read a lace chart, knit short rows, and troubleshoot fit issues. Classes are spaced out by either one or two weeks depending on how much knitting you are expected to complete by the next class.

• 5/14: Knitting the neckline
  • Homework for next class: finish the neckline, block the sweater
• 5/21: Checking the fit and adjusting if necessary

Materials for the first class:

• Pattern: Tin Can Knits’s Love Note sweater, available here.
• Yarn: The pattern calls for holding two strands (blend of fingering and mohair lace weight yarn) or a DK yarn held single. See pattern for sizing suggestions and yardage requirements.
  • Yardage given is for COMBINED yarn; so if your size calls for 600 yds, it requires 600 yds of the fingering weight yarn and 600 yds of lace weight mohair yarn.
• Circular needles: 10US (6mm) AND US7 (4.5mm) in 16” and 32”.
  • Please hold off buying more than the needles you used to knit your gauge swatch until the first class if you’re unsure what length to get or if you want to be sure about your gauge.
• Double-pointed needles OR 12" circulars: 10US (6mm) and 7US (4.5mm) if magic loop isn’t used (we’ll cover this concept in the first class so you can decide whether to buy DPNs or small circulars).
• Stitch markers
• Darning/tapestry needle

***Homework for the first class on 3/12:***
Please come to class having knit and blocked a stockinette gauge swatch in the round. If you don't block it, it won't be accurate! Part of leveling up is knitting a swatch in the round if we’re knitting the garment in the round. Since the gauge we're aiming for with Love Note is 16 stitches & 24 rows in 4” square, we’ll want to knit a bigger swatch because only measuring from inside the swatch will give us an accurate gauge. Cast on 24 stitches on US 10 needles. Knit 30 rows in stockinette in the round using Ysolda’s method (Option 3) before binding off. Block your swatch as you’re going to wash it (likely handwashing with a few drops of Soak)—here’s a tutorial on the quick-dry burrito method. Have a go at measuring your swatch (photo guide here)—if your gauge has fewer than 16 stitches or 24 rows in 4 inches, try going down one needle size and knitting a second swatch (don’t unravel the first one). If your gauge has more than 16 stitches or 24 rows in 4 inches, try going up a needle size.
